AFRICA GREEN TECH GENERATION CAMPAIGN
Uganda Girl Guides is an NGO that provides girls with opportunities for training in the development of character and service in the community. The role UGGA plays in the Africa green tech generation campaign is to liase with school administrators in various schools around Uganda to help in mobilizing students and hence preparing them for the tree planting activity.
The Africa green tech generation was realized in 2016 by the YESS (Youth Exchange South to South) girl’s movement in an effort to curb climate change and raise awareness on the importance of conserving the environment. The projects was actualized In 2017 and is being spearheaded in 9 different countries where the exchange is taking place namely Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Rwanda Burundi ,Malawi and Madagascar The project is also in line with UN;s sustainable development goals(goal 13; Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts and goal 15;Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
Purpose
Global warming has been an increasingly alarming problem of the 21st century. Rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system and its related effects. Human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming . Other likely changes include more frequent extreme weather events including heat waves, droughts, heavy rainfall with floods and many organizations including the UN have come up with a charter to advocate for the rehabilitation and conservation of the environment.
The principle threats to biodiversity in Uganda include habitat loss, modification and alteration along with unsustainable harvesting, pollution and introduction of alien species. Climate change induced extreme weather conditions will also introduce new threats to biodiversity. The challenges ranging from poor solid waste management, pollution of land, air and water and degradation of ecosystems due to soil erosion clearly have anthropogenic causes.
The key approach to tackling the above challenges therefore, has to involve education and awareness raising and implementation of a system of incentives and dis-incentives. There is also need to regulate the way people use the environment and natural resource base and thus the YESS Girls initiated the environmental campaign dubbed the Africa Green Tech Generation. In order to pursue aggressive public awareness and environmental education programs to forestall possible economic growth related damage and degradation of the environment.
